Methodology & Sources
This report draws on market data published by leading recruitment and compensation consulting firms: Hays Salary Guide 2026, Robert Half Technology Salary Guide 2026, Michael Page Technology Salary Survey 2026, as well as sector benchmarks from public reports by Willis Towers Watson, Mercer and Korn Ferry. All amounts are expressed in euros (€) and correspond to gross annual fixed salary, excluding variable and equity.
Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
The CTO remains the most sought-after executive tech role in Europe. The median salary range is €180K-€350K depending on geography and company size. In Switzerland, the median salary reaches €280K for a scale-up of 50-200 employees, compared to €220K in France and €240K in Germany. CTOs of large companies (500+ employees) can reach €400K+ in fixed salary. Demand is particularly strong for profiles mastering cloud-native architectures, AI/ML and cybersecurity.
Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)
Demand for CISOs exploded (+35% vs 2024) following the strengthening of European regulations (NIS2, DORA, EU AI Act). Median range: €160K-€300K. In Switzerland, an experienced CISO (10+ years) in the financial or healthcare sector can reach €320K in fixed salary. Certified profiles (CISSP, CISM, CEH) mastering compliance frameworks (ISO27001, SOC2, GDPR) benefit from a 15-25% premium vs non-certified profiles. The shortage is particularly acute in regulated sectors.
Chief AI Officer & VP AI
A new fast-growing role (+120% demand vs 2024), the Chief AI Officer is the highest-paid position in the executive tech market. Range: €200K-€400K, with peaks at €500K+ for profiles combining academic research and industrial experience. Switzerland, France and Germany concentrate 75% of positions. Sought-after skills: GenAI (LLM, RAG, fine-tuning), MLOps, computer vision, NLP, and mastery of the EU AI Act. Profiles with recent scientific publications benefit from a significant premium.
VP Engineering & Engineering Director
Strong demand in tech scale-ups (50-500 employees). Range: €140K-€250K. Remote-first VP Engineering (managing distributed teams) are particularly sought after, with a 10-15% premium vs on-site roles. Key skills: team scaling (10→100+), engineering culture, delivery excellence, distributed architecture. Profiles with fundraising experience (Series A-C) benefit from higher valuation.
Chief Data Officer (CDO) & Chief Product Officer (CPO)
CDO: €150K-€280K. Sustained demand in data-intensive sectors (fintech, healthtech, e-commerce). Skills: data engineering, analytics, data governance, data monetization, EU AI Act compliance. CPO: €140K-€270K. Strong demand in B2B SaaS. Sought-after profiles: product-led growth, discovery, strategic roadmap, go-to-market. CPOs with 0→1 experience (new product launches) benefit from a 20%+ premium.
Trends & Outlook 2027
- Structural shortage of senior tech talent: demand will continue to exceed supply until at least 2028
- AI premium: profiles mastering GenAI and EU AI Act will benefit from a growing premium (currently +25% vs non-AI profiles)
- Remote-first: 100% remote positions now benefit from a 10-15% premium vs on-site (trend reversal vs 2023)
- Certifications: certified profiles (CISSP, CISM, AWS/Azure/GCP, Kubernetes) benefit from a 15-25% premium
- Equity: variable compensation (bonus + equity) represents 20-40% of total compensation for C-Level positions in scale-ups
“The European executive tech market has entered a new era. The shortage of senior talent is no longer cyclical but structural. Companies that succeed will be those that can attract and retain the best profiles through a combination of competitive compensation, significant equity and technically stimulating projects.”
